Ultimate Campers’ Nautilus off-road camper trailer has won a product design award at the Good Design Awards, Australia’s oldest and most prestigious award for design and innovation with its origins dating back to 1958. The announcement was made at a ceremony in Sydney on Friday 29 May.
“This is great news for the entire Ultimate Campers family which includes not only our team at Moruya in the South Coast of News South Wales but also Ultimate owners from across the country. Our owners challenged us to develop the next generation of off-road campers some years ago. They were looking for more comfort and more space and were looking to trade up but did not want to leave the Ultimate family,” said Simon Don, National Sales & Marketing Manager, Ultimate Campers.
Five years ago the company began the design process that would lead to the Nautilus becoming a reality. The company brought on board a professional industrial design team and embarked on an unprecedented RV testing regime including putting the camper through its paces at the Advanced Centre for Automotive Research and Testing (ACART). ACART is a collaborative undertaking between the Ford Motor Company of Australia Limited and the University of Melbourne.
According to the Good Design Awards, the Nautilus optimises the weight, space and convenience inherent in most RV products by offering a compact footprint and low profile for easy storage and towing; an expandable living space to rival larger caravans; energy systems to provide high levels of self-sufficiency and luxury culminating in a unique design aesthetic.
The Good Design Awards judges commented: “The Nautilus off-road camper trailer displays exemplary form, function, safety, innovation and a true commitment to design on every level. From the minute you step into this camper trailer, you can see that a designer has been involved from the start – everything has been beautifully thought out and implemented. The designers clearly understand the end user and have delivered a product that will delight.”
