4×4 Training on the South Coast of NSW

Living and working on the beautiful South Coast of NSW does have its advantages – great fishing, amazing beaches, great camping grounds and a laid back lifestyle.

But being experts in off-road camping means that we got to know our stuff when it comes to off-road driving and towing camper trailers through the rough terrain that our customers want to experience. Whether that’s the Old Telegraph Track, the Simpson Desert, the Canning Stock Route or the Gibb River Road, we need to be on top of our game.

But where on the South Coast can you fine those off-road 4WD skills? Just head slightly inland to Braidwood to the Great Divide Tours 4×4 Training Centre.

We took 12 of our team for 4×4 off-road refresher training to the centre. We also took an XTERRAN to practice towing off-road camper trailers.

The day started with some basic ‘getting to know your vehicle’ exercises, focussing on wheel placement, ruts, mud driving etc. We then moved to some hillier terrain and completed hill climbs and descents, stall starts and towing up/down hill climbs and rutted terrain.

In the afternoon the team covered more serious hill climbs and descents (up to a 35 degree slope), and towing through difficult terrain, plus water, more mud driving and recoveries.

Tow vehicle used included a Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Land Cruiser 79 Series ute, Toyota Hilux, Toyota Landcruiser 105 Wagon, a Discovery 3 and a Nissan Defender. A great off road vehicles for towing.

Thanks to Tony and Vic at Great Divide Tours for a great day.
