Planning water for remote travel

Calculate normal use, emergency reserves, refill quality and filtration.

Reviewed August 2026 · General information

Plan water by people, days and activities, then add a separate emergency reserve and allow for delays, heat and uncertain refill quality.

Build a daily estimate

  • Drinking
  • Cooking and food preparation
  • Personal washing
  • Dishwashing and cleaning
  • Hot-weather and medical requirements
  • Pets where applicable

Protect the reserve

Carry emergency water separately so one damaged tank, pump or contaminated fill cannot remove the entire supply. NSW National Parks recommends substantial extra water for outback travel and at least four litres per person per day for drinking.

Refill safely

  • Confirm source quality before filling
  • Keep potable hoses and fittings clean
  • Filter or treat only using a proven method suited to the hazard
  • Avoid mixing uncertain water into the entire supply
  • Record remote refill locations but verify current availability
