Reviewed August 2026 · General information
A calm setup is created before arrival. A repeatable sequence, sensible packing and a camper designed around access can turn the end of a long driving day into the beginning of the trip.
Choose the site before opening the camper
- Look overhead, underfoot and downhill for branches, soft ground, drainage and runoff.
- Consider wind direction, morning sun, shade, privacy and vehicle exit.
- Keep clear of waterways, unstable edges and designated no-camping areas.
- Position for safe awning and canvas tension without blocking neighbours or roads.
Use one repeatable sequence
| Stage | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Position and level | Avoid correcting the base after the living space is open |
| Secure the trailer | Apply the brake, chock and stabilise as instructed |
| Deploy the living space | Follow the model-specific order without forcing components |
| Tension and weather-check | Manage canvas, drainage, wind and awning loads |
| Connect only what is needed | Keep overnight stops simple; add systems for longer stays |
| Final safety check | Remove trip hazards and confirm ventilation and appliance clearances |
Pack around the sequence
- Keep chocks, levelling aids and setup tools accessible before the camper is opened.
- Give frequently used kitchen, lighting and bedding items permanent homes.
- Separate wet, dusty and recovery equipment from clean living gear.
- Use labelled zones so either traveller can find and repack equipment.
- Practise at home, including a wet-weather pack-down, before a major trip.
Fast should still be safe
The correct process is the manufacturer's process for the model and conditions. Wind, uneven ground and poor light justify taking longer. A useful handover should teach normal setup, pack-down, weather precautions and the checks that prevent damage.
